How to Fax Social Security (Find Your Office's Fax Number)

How to fax Social Security

Social Security has no single national fax number. You fax your local Social Security office. SSA's own guidance says you can submit forms and documents to your local office "by fax, by mail, or using your office's drop box."

Find your local office's fax number

  1. Check your letter first. If Social Security sent you a letter asking for documents, use the fax number or office listed on it. It's the office handling your case.
  2. Otherwise, find your nearest office with the Field Office Locator linked from SSA's submit forms and documents page. Each office has its own fax number. SSA publishes them in its field office open data.
  3. Call the office if you're unsure. Ask them to confirm the fax number and that they accept the document you're sending by fax.

What you can fax, and what you can't

You can usually fax You can't fax
Completed Social Security forms the office asked for Proof of identity or citizenship for a Social Security card (birth certificate, passport, ID)
Pay stubs, bank statements, financial records Anything the office says it needs as an original
Rental agreements and other supporting paperwork

For Social Security cards, SSA needs "original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency" and states: "We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies." A fax is a copy, so those documents have to go in person.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a toll-free fax number for Social Security? No. Social Security's national number (1-800-772-1213) is for phone calls only. Faxes go to your local office.

Should I put my full Social Security number on the fax? Include the identifying number your letter asks for (your Social Security number or the claim number printed on it) so the office can match the fax to your file. If you have no letter, call the office and ask what to include.

How do I know they got it? Your FaxItIn tracking link shows "Delivered" when the office's fax machine confirms every page. Call the office after a few business days if you need confirmation that it was added to your file.
