How to Fax the IRS Online (2026 Fax Numbers by Form)
How to fax the IRS online
The IRS has no single fax number. The right number depends on the form you're sending. If you're replying to an IRS letter or notice, use the fax number printed on that letter. Otherwise, find your form below.
All numbers were checked against IRS instructions on October 30, 2026. The IRS says these numbers "may change without notice," so check the form's IRS.gov page if anything looks different.

Tips before you fax the IRS
- Form SS-4: include your own fax number on the form if you have one. The IRS says it generally faxes the EIN back within 4 business days. These numbers are for EIN applications only.
- Forms 2848 and 8821: you can also submit online at IRS.gov/Submit2848 or IRS.gov/Submit8821 (requires an IRS Secure Access account). If you signed electronically, you must submit online.
- Form 14039: the IRS prefers online submission at irs.gov/dmaf/form/f14039. If you fax, include a cover sheet marked "Confidential." Send the form one way only (online, mail, or fax), not several.
- Replying to a notice: include a copy of the notice and put your name and the notice number on every page.
- Keep your receipt. A fax delivery confirmation is your record of when the IRS received your document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fax the IRS from my phone? Yes. Save or scan the form as a PDF on your phone, upload it at faxit.in, and enter the IRS fax number. You don't need a fax machine or an app.
Can I fax my tax return to the IRS? Generally no. Original tax returns must be e-filed or mailed to the IRS address for your state. Fax is for specific forms and for replies to IRS letters that list a fax number.
How do I know the IRS received my fax? Your FaxItIn tracking link shows "Delivered" when the IRS fax machine confirms it received every page. Processing can take days or weeks after that.
What if the IRS fax line is busy? IRS lines are often busy during tax season. FaxItIn retries automatically for up to an hour. If it still can't get through, the fax is cancelled and your card isn't charged.
Fax numbers last verified October 30, 2026, against IRS instructions for Form SS-4, Form 2848, Form 8821 and Form 14039. FaxItIn is not affiliated with the IRS.
