How to Fax FEMA Disaster Assistance Documents (800-827-8112)
How to fax FEMA
FEMA's fax number for disaster assistance documents is 1-800-827-8112, and FEMA requires a cover sheet. Use it to send documents FEMA asks for after you apply: proof of identity, occupancy or ownership, insurance decisions, receipts, and appeal letters.
FEMA fax number
| What you're sending | Fax number |
|---|---|
| Documents for an Individual Assistance application or appeal | 1-800-827-8112 (cover sheet required) |
If a FEMA letter gives you different instructions, follow the letter.
What to put on the cover sheet
Make the cover sheet page 1 of your PDF, and include:
- Your full name, as it appears on your FEMA application
- Your FEMA application number and disaster number (both are on your FEMA letters)
- Your phone number and the damaged property's address
- A one-line description: "Insurance settlement letter," "Proof of ownership," "Appeal letter"
Also write your name and application number at the top of every page, so loose pages can still be matched to your file.
How to fax FEMA with FaxItIn
- Take clear photos or scans of your documents and combine them, cover sheet first, into one PDF.
- Go to faxit.in on your phone or computer, upload the PDF and enter 1-800-827-8112. No account or fax machine is needed.
- Check the price and pay. It's $3.49 for up to 5 pages, plus $0.25 for each extra page. Your card is charged only if the fax is delivered.

- Bring them to a Disaster Recovery Center, if one is open in your area.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fax FEMA from my phone? Yes. Photograph each page, save the photos as one PDF (most phones can do this from the share menu or a notes app), and upload it at faxit.in.
FEMA's fax line is busy. What happens? After a major disaster, FEMA's fax line can be very busy. FaxItIn retries automatically for up to an hour. If it still can't get through, the fax is cancelled and your card isn't charged.
How do I know FEMA received my fax? Your FaxItIn tracking link shows "Delivered" once FEMA's fax system confirms every page. Allow a few days, then check your status on DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA helpline.
